30-08-09 Sketch

This is a short musical sketch I recorded in two passes – the first was the rhythm guitar and drums, the second pass is the bass guitar. I was more just jamming with myself than trying to compose something – so you are getting a look at how ideas sometimes come about. The key to music is the notion of play. You have to play – and by that I mean play around – to get ideas. Ideas don’t just appear out of the ether unless you are one of those lucky ones.
Anyway, this features some delay guitar and an atmosphere I’ve been meaning to visit for a long time. I visit the same stamping grounds as David Gilmour and Michael Brook, but in this instance the bass is a little too busy at the rear end of the track. Development and refinement is in order.
Enjoy!

More Dreams

Lots of different dreams merged into one. Owned a different shop near the seaside, dealt with shoplifter, then walked Alex forever and ever, though green pastures, up hill and down dale. Lost my shoes. Got lost. But then we methodically retraced our steps back home.

Do I let events define me, or do I define the events around me?

Pulling a Fast One?

A temporary paperboy hits a car at speed and scrapes car, resulting in damage. Suddenly, this is my problem. “You have insurance?” says angry Dad forcefully to The Missus. Yes, we have insurance but only to cover damage to your son and his bicycle – not the damage he inflicts on others. Something doesn’t ring true – I suspect that this might be a ruse to extract cash. Surely the car driver has insurance?

The Persistence of Derision (Tabula Rasa)

It is hard to believe that this is the first “proper” recording I’ve done since late April. Where did the time go? Seeing as I finally got my stuff together it seemed only natural that I should return to my hobby. But this time I am full of anger, hate, bile and absolute frustration at this unjust world I have been borne into. The new “album” (always hate calling them that – just feels wrong) is going to be angry and horrible. It will reflect how I feel. It will be carthartic and revelationary and healing. It will be my “heavy” album.
The first track – the opening track – is this: The Persistence of Derision. A play on the phrase persistence of vision and it is an ugly, brutish, horrible track. A real audio shit-stain. Nasty, nasty, nasty. I don’t like it – so I must be doing something right as I don’t want this record to be at all likeable.

Dippity Dip

Had a real dip today. Running out of options – no light on the horizon, etc. Experts agree – I am stuffed. Whoopee!

Meanwhile, had an afternoon nap with The Missus – and it was good!

Not So Fast

Feeling pleased with myself as I did some recording last night for the first time in a while and started to lay the foundation of my “heavy” album…

Meanwhile, a VAT expert says that the clause I found won’t be applicable because of very sub-clauses, so I am back to square one and not as clever as I thought I was.

Fixing The Mix

Pleased with myself as I managed to fix the mix of “Everything you ever owned is mine” and now I feel it is fit for human consumption. It was simple, just mix the drum and bass track in mono and adjust the levels according. It really cut out some of those extraneous frequencies and made the track heavier and even more ugh! (Which is what I wanted)
