The latest batch of King Crimson 40th Anniversary edition have been released and my copy of "Starless and Bible Black" arrived today. I was naturally keen to hear what they had done to the album with regards to the 5.1 surround sound mix and was pleasantly surprised by the renewed power of the album.

I am registered with a website called "Sentric Music" and this site supposedly finds music for adverts and whatever promotional contracts it is handling. They often send out emails requesting a certain type of song for a project and usually it is some kind of indie-rock genre that I am not interesting in covering. However, last Friday they sent a brief out for an advert for a mobile phone company and wanted something suitably twee and spacey. This is my attempt at a track for them. I doubt it will get picked but this was recorded specifically for a mobile phone advert. So there you go...

This is a rough idea I put down recently. I haven't done any serious recording for about five months, so whenever I return to active recording duty I always just mess around playing the simplest things just so I can get my fingers back into some sort of shape. Hence this song is as basic as it gets - however, good songs sometimes come from these basic frameworks.

This recording also marks my debut recording using my iMac DAW and was put down using Logic Studio.

Via the wonder web and YouTube, Anthony Bloxham contacted me regarding a possible collaboration. As someone who has no qualms with getting his feet wet and doing the fandango with complete strangers, I said "Yes!" Anthony Bloxham sent me a backing track this afternoon which seemed to consist of a drone, some birdsong, ambient outdoor noises and thunderstorms. Of course, I didn't know this until the piece had ended as I just strapped on my guitar, loaded his track into Sonar and pressed "Record". And so this is my attempt at doing something very live and improvised with a complete stranger. I'll let you all decide whether or not it is a success or not!

This is a vocal track I recorded for a CD boxset I am working on. This is a rough mix with a guide vocal to give you an idea of what the final track will sound like. I have also re-recorded the drum track. As you can hear, this is a parody of "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles, which happens to be my favourite track of theirs.

RC50-2 - 29 July 2006

This is the second live improvised track I recorded using a Boss RC-50 looping pedal. This is more of a sketch than anything serious and is a good demonstration of how I come up with guitar solos. I usually work them out like this and then refine them over time. However, this example has all the mistakes left in and a little bit of distortion too. Enjoy!

The concept behind the recording of this track is an interesting exercise in creating random music and discovering patterns instinctively. Using a Boss RC-20XL, I created a silent loop of about 30 seconds and began to play a single note, building up notes on the repeated loop until random themes begin to form. I particularly like the bell-like chime of the guitar. But the question always remains: is this music? Whatever it is, I personally find it very relaxing and think of it as a truly subconscious creation. Enjoy!
