Feedback to Yoli Moli
Eino Keskitalo says of my rough mix of Yoli Moli:
"Man, that's some excellent work there. The main synth guitar theme is rather catchy! The bass is a subtle but tasty addition too! I do think the track should breath a little. Do you think it would work if you added eight bars in the beginning, using the first marimba figure, with from the synth guitar nothing but a low drone? Similarly at 01:08 when the main theme has repeated twice, the synth guitar could pipe down for a moment (maybe just do the drone thing). It's a bit tiring for the ear to hear it throughout. But after a break coming back to that main theme would sound fantastic, I bet!"
In my opinion the track is too busy in its current form. I take on board and agree with what you say. The next phase in the recording is to edit down the backing track to a suitable length (shave around 30 seconds off), let the marimba theme play for one rotation, bring in the bass, then bring in the synth, then end - so the instruments are layered a bit more tastefully rather than all appearing at once. Alternatively, keep the backing track at length, but maybe add some rock drums towards the middle/end of the piece to give it some added dynamism (my Handsonic is currently waiting to be unpacked).
What you are hearing here though is my working process. I tend to work out melodies/sounds and get them to fit, before editing them into a song or coming up with a verse/chorus/alternative verse approach. Anyway, I am just glad you liked what you heard on this rough mix.
