This is another album from the glorious year that was 2003, which has been lovingly remixed into surround sound and presented as a free downloadable DVD for playback on a 5.1 surround sound speaker system.
The “Empty Space” recordings were made using my old Fender Fat Strat, a Roland GR-1 guitar synthesiser, a Roland GP-100 FX processor and a Line 6 DL-4 digital delay pedal. In the great tradition of looping, each performance here was played live and recorded direct to hard disk. There are no overdubs and what you hear is what I played.
To say this is an ambient recording would be correct and it follows in the great tradition laid down by Robert Fripp and his soundscaping efforts and his work with Brian Eno. The concept was to present a series of recordings that would act as a minimalist soundtrack to a science fiction film that has yet to be filmed. The tracks are spacey, scary in places, organic, soothing and revelatory. It represents a journey and resolution, both physical and spiritual.
The challenge with this presentation was to create a 5.1 surround sound stage out of a stereo source. As the recordings were made live, there were no multi-tracks recorded, just a stereo pair. You need at least three sources to create a surround sound mix traditionally, but using some psycho-auditory trickery and clever equalisation, I have managed to create soundscapes that envelope the listener completely.
If you want to sample this recording, you must download the .ISO file presented below and burn it to a DVD-R. Most DVD recording software will be compatible with this file format. I have also included the sleeve graphics so you can print your own sleeves too.
Enjoy!
